Xiaogan is named for the allusion to a dutiful son named Dong Yong in the Eastern Han Dynasty, who sold into servitude to bury his father and moved the Jade Emperor for his filial piety. It is located in the east of north central areas of Hubei Province, to the north of the Changjiang River and south of Tongbai Mountains. Its region crosses east longitude 113°19’~114°30’, north latitude 30°22’~31°51’, covering an area of 195.5 km from north to south and 121 km from east to west with a total area of 8910 km2. Xiaogan is next to Xinyang District of Henan Province on the north, neighbors Hong’an County of Huanggang City and Huangpi District and Dongxihu District of Wuhan City on the east, borders on Caidian District of Wuhan City and Xiantao City on the south, adjoins Suizhou City, Jingshan County and Tianmen City on the west. With the north side higher than the south, Xiaogan has low mountains in north areas, hilly lands in center and plains and lakes in south Districts. At present, Xiaogan has jurisdiction over Yumeng County, Xiaochang County, Dawu County and Xiaonan District, and agent jurisdiction over Hanchuan City, Yingcheng City and Anlu City.

As one of the nearest cities to Wuhan City, it is on the core level of Wuhan Metropolitan Area, showing obvious location and traffic advantages. With rich natural resources, good industrial base, complete infrastructure and deep cultural heritage, it presents a good investment environment.

To the end of 2013, roads throughout the whole city reached 157.246 km, with road density of 157.246 km/km2; highroads are accessible to 7 counties (cities) of Xiaogan, and roads from urban areas to each county (city) were transformed from the hard to the black, concrete (asphalt) roads are opened in all systematically organized and incorporated villages, which can be divided as follows according to administrative level: 6 highways (Wuhan-Yichang, Wuhan-Shiyan, Wuhan-Xiaogan, Beijing-Zhuhai, Wuhan-Jinmen, Dawu-Suizhou), totaling 309.2 km, 2 national roads (G107 and G316), totaling 148.812 km, 13 provincial roads, totaling 3086.337 km and 28.216 km of accommodation roads. And divided as technology grading: 309.2 km of highways, 92.988 km of Grade A roads, 1079.824 km of Grade B roads, 1342.006 km of Grade C roads and 11186.639 of Grade C roads.

Till the end of 2013, Xiaogan had 2527 passenger vehicles, 12907 trucks (including 259 dangerous good vehicles) and 2190 taxies. Now Xiaogan has 602 passenger traffic lines and 2536 road signs. The pull-in rate, on-shift rate and on-schedule rate of passenger vehicles are up to 100%. There are 36 vehicle maintenance enterprises of Class I, 50 maintenance enterprises of Class II and 383 specialized maintenance companies of Class III, together with 2 stations for motor vehicle performance testing, 2 integrated driving schools of Level I and 13 Level II driving schools for motor vehicle driver training. 

Till the end of 2013, there were 15 navigable rivers with total mileage of 546.8 km (including 94.9 km of Hanjiang River), including 94.9 km of Level III channel, 18.6 km of Level IV channel, 83.7 km of Level V channel, 129.8 km of Level VI channel, 178.8 km of Level VII channel and 41 km of Level VIII channel. There were 6 ports above county level, 27 harbor districts and 143 berths. The natural water front of port areas is as long as 61.4 km, total area of storage yards is 110,000 m2, and 118 sets of handling machinery was provided. Xiaogan had 435 certified vessels with 102543 gross tons, 40161 net tons, 47551 kW, 141709 deadweight tons and 4029 rated seats. There were 206 corporate boats owned by 8 water transportation enterprises, the carrying capacity of which is 145709 tons and operation capacity is 44085 kW.

Interlaced railway networks including Beijing-Guangzhou Railway crosses from south to north, Hankou-Danjiangkou Railway is from southeast to northwest, Changjiangbu-Jinzhou Railway directing the west, Anlu-Weijiadian Railway passing through the north of Xiaogan and connecting Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and Hankou-Danjiangkou Railway, Shanghai-Wuhan-Chengdu High-Speed Railway crossing the south, Shijiazhuang-Wuhan High-Speed Railway entering from the east and Wuhan-Xiaogan Intercity Railway being constructed, constitute the artery of Xiaogan City, which further intensifies the communication between Xiaogan and surrounding areas. As Hanjiang River, Huanhe River and Fuhe River feed into Changjiang River and Tianhe International Airport is just 32 km away from the urban area of Xiaogan, a three-dimensional transportation network including waterways, land routes and airlines is formed with road serving as the main body, railways as the artery and water transportation as supplement. 

With the rapid development of national economy and bold transition of social presence of Xiaogan, great changes and achievements have been made in transport and transmission through the Xiaogan. Traffic infrastructure construction and transport facilities were greatly developed, transportation capacity and quality were significantly improved, general structure was obviously perfected, and transport market became active gradually, which all play important roles in the rapid development of Xiaogan national economy, the promotion of regional communication, the improvement of investment environment as well as economic and social development of Xiaogan City.
